Who Can Join?

EVERYONE IS WELCOME! There are no age limits. Anyone who has a desire to learn to speed skate is welcome to join Team FAST. Are you just a beginner? Not a problem. As long as you possess basic skills on inline skates, that's all it takes to begin our practices. We'll work you into our program and in no time you'll feel like an expert! Maybe you're intimidated about being the "new person" on the team... don't worry... we were all the "new person" at one time or another. Perhaps you're in your 30's or 40's and you're thinking, "I'm too old to start a new sport or to compete on a team." Nonsense! You'll find many older adults skating just to keep in shape and a large number competing at speed meets.

Whatever you age, sex, race, etc... EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Maybe you were on a team that disbanded, your rink closed or whatever... you're welcome to give us a try!

Maybe you're currently on a team and you're just not getting the level of training you think you need to become a champion... you're welcome to give Team FAST a try.

In order to join the speed team a skater must be able to perform basic skating techniques wearing inline skates such as forward skating, stopping and cross-overs. It is not necessary for a skater to own a pair of speed skates before he/she starts. It is necessary however to have access to a pair of recreational roller blades… speed skates if possible. A person does not have to be “fast” in order to join… we’ll help you get fast!

Inline speed skating is an exciting and challenging sport. It takes a lot of patience, determination and HARD WORK to be good at speed skating. I think you will find the extra effort is worth it! If you are a veteran of inline speed skating, welcome back!

Team FAST team members have the opportunity to compete at local, state, national and international events. Maybe you’re not sure you want to compete yet… that’s okay! Maybe you just want to be involved in something disciplined to help you lose weight or to get in shape. Every one of all ages is welcome here! Team FAST is comprised of new, intermediate and “seasoned” speed skaters. We have a structured, disciplined training and competitive schedule planned for this year designed to accommodate all levels of skating ability… from beginner to advanced! Speed Team members will have the opportunity to skate with skaters of equal ability, National Champions and even World-Class Champions in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Team FAST holds practice both indoors and outdoors. The team competes in the South Florida Speed League each year as well as other events located outside our immediate area. Skaters may skate as few or as many competitive events as they desire… we do not force our skaters to compete.

Information on upcoming events and meetings, as well as practice schedule changes will be made available during practice schedules.

What equipment will I need?

Each skater must have inline speed skates or roller blades and a safety helmet (ANSI Certified) before they can practice. Skaters should wear a speed uniform or shorts if they have them. If you do not have a speed uniform, bicycle-type shorts or loose gym shorts  and a t-shirt are acceptable.

Do I have to compete if I join?

No. Speed skating is a great way to get in shape or to lose weight. While most of our skaters intend on competing, it is not required.

When do we practice?

Practice schedules change from time to time based on upcoming race schedules, the rink’s schedule and season. You can review the practice schedule here.  Any changes to the schedule are communicated during our practices and posted on our website.

What if we want to practice more?

Some skaters may want to practice more than what time we have allotted… great! There are many team members who practice as often as 6 days a week. See the coach and he can direct you to other team members who practice outside this schedule… you are welcome to practice with them. If you are an advanced skater, our Team Coaches will develop a program tailored for you.

How much does it cost?

Monthly Practice Fees

Each club with Team FAST is tiered differently. At all our rinks, the first practice is free. If you decide you'd like to join the team, check with the coach for the monthly dues amounts. Most of our rinks charge $40 or $45 a month per skater. If you have multiple family members skating, some of our clubs offer discounts for multiple family members. For example, Vero charges $45 for 1 skater, $70 for 2 skaters, $100 for 3 skaters, and $120 for 4 skaters. Coaching fees are due the first Sunday of each month. Practice fees are collected at the beginning of each practice.

USA Roller Sports Membership

This is required to compete in most meets and is good for the entire season (Sep 08 – Aug 09). The cost is $40. This card also provides the skater with supplemental accident insurance for practices and meets when a certified coach is present. For insurance purposes, amateur cards are required for all team members attending practice. New team members who have not acquired an amateur card by the time they start practicing will be required to acquire an amateur card within the first 30 days of beginning.

Competition Entry Fees

Entry fees vary with each meet, ranging from $35 for league meets to over $75 for large Invitational events. Prior to signing up for a meet, you will be told the amount for each event. All meets are optional; however, once a skater is entered in an event, the entry fee must be paid even if the skater will not be able to attend the competition. In addition to the required entry fees, there will be a $10 coach’s fee (per day) for invitational and league meets and $10 per event for Regionals and Nationals.
